How do you avoid cysts in the underarm, and what do you do if you experience one?

underarm cysts from natural deodorant

What causes an underarm cyst?

Cysts usually occur when epidermal cells move and settle under the skin surface instead of shedding because of slow skin cell turnover. These cells continue to grow and multiply, forming a wall around themselves. The cysts then produce normal skin fluids known as keratin.

Cysts are usually found around hair follicles. Hair follicles are like cysts themselves but have openings. These openings allow regular lubricating oils to be released into your hair. However, a cyst may occur if an opening is blocked  by some build up or the site gets inflamed. Super Deodorant primarily uses oil and butter in its formula, which can cause excess oil buildup if you aren't showering daily and/or experiencing slow skin cell turnover.

Naturally, skin can clean (exfoliate) itself inside out and protect itself from infections. Here are some facts.

  • It can clean itself at a cellular level with the help of healthy lymphatic flow. When the lymphatic system works well, the skin appears smooth and inflammation-free.
  • It also exfoliates itself when you sleep at night.
  • It performs deep pore cleaning when you sweat. Dead skin and dirt get pushed out when you sweat, keeping the pores clean.

It is hard for anyone to detect when their skin cell turnover slows down, leading to an accumulation of dead skin cells. Age and lifestyle are cited as the reasons.

Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

  • Lumps just beneath the skin. Some may be painful.
  • Lumps may become inflamed, appear red or may leak fluid.

What is the solution?

If you encounter this problem often, shower at least once daily and exfoliate your skin once or twice a month using a mix of AHA and BHA.

BHAs have a smaller molecular structure and will penetrate deeper quickly. Read the instructions on the product box carefully and use the product as suggested. Do not exfoliate too frequently, as over-exfoliation could lead to other irritations and discomforts. Once or twice a month should yield good results. Shaving is also a cost effective form of exfoliation, but it won't exfoliate deeply like a BHA.

Exfoliating the skin is not mandatory. However, if your skin cell turnover slows down and you face these issues, exfoliating your skin becomes a smarter, more convenient option. We cannot recommend a specific acid peel because so many options are available at different prices. We suggest choosing a product that your skin can tolerate and something that fits your budget.
